But having a patched version in the CVS history is always best to be able to be used while we are evaluating, and in the future if someone wants to check out to do a comparison. Also don't discount the religious-like furor which can be generated over malloc packages (and editors) - so this will take a while :-) It also provides documentation just in case we end up with refresh^3 nightmare for v2.03 and want to extract goodies from the CVS tree.
