Then you should also look at automake, since it contains, autoconf macros. The latest version of GNU grep comes with two Patches, PATCHES.A{C,M}, this are collection of patches base on a long email exchange with Eli and Francois Pinard, when porting GNU grep. I would not mind to nuke them, if auto{conf,make} could be make to also work on DJGPP. FWIW, the patches were send to the autoconf list.
