Debian 2.0 selects egcs as default compiler, you must be carefull to select 2.8.x as compiler (all is thinked to select egcs). In fact they talk about new and old gcc (the new version is egcs). But all of these problems make me think about the rpm and deb distribution formats where the mainatiner defines pre and post installation operations. One purpose is check installation configurations and modify it. I think that's the only way to solve the distribution problems, I know is hard to implement.
