Actually, this doesn't work (or if it is, it isn't as
straightforward as I thought). I thought I had tried
it once, but the following didn't work (using JUNCTION
from sysinternals.com):

   $ mkdir foo
   $ junction bar foo
   $ rmdir foo  # rm foo doesn't work either

There are other things to try, though.
