I don't need an strace. Now that I've duplicated it, the cause is obvious. It's just not obvious why it ever works for me since it now fails every time. Maybe, gasp!, I had two different versions of the DLL on my system here. I don't normally use my laptop for this kind of testing, so it may have suffered some bit rot while I wasn't looking. cgf
