This being the case any default (e.g. text) is defendable. I would like to see CYGWIN=[no]binmode abolished, thus I am not advocating using it. cgf's suggestion (use the mode of the automount point) is ingenious but IMHO of little value. Most people have few drives. Understanding the various options to set the default and then setting the default and then setting the mode anyway, if the new default is no good for a special case, will require more effort than simply changing the mode... (long sentence, on purpose). Simply use a FIXED default. I have one wish: somehow allow "umount /" and then "mount c:/xxx /" from DOS (not very easy currently). Pierre
