Yeah, there's a performance bottleneck in there somewhere that I haven't
been able to track down.  Any insight would be appreciated.

I'll look into this.  Does you actually use and rely on console title
updating?  I'd be happy to rip it out of cygwin.

But, seriously, can you provide an strace or a more detailed analysis of
where it is failing?  Does it always fail in intl?
