Maybe login doesn't start the shell in the right way? If I type bash -i then I get the normal session. Then I see two things that appear to be wrong: 1) My terminal window behaves oddly. I set TERM to linux as usual but control-L doesn't work correctly (it half works). 2) More seriously, a control-C will end the remote session.
