Why is cygwin using a 12 byte long double when the vc compiler uses an 8
byte, does anyone know?

If this is just an oversight then

#undef LONG_DOUBLE_TYPE_SIZE
#define LONG_DOUBLE_TYPE_SIZE 64

should be put into cygwin32/mingw32.h
